ID 5th Year Thesis

The research compiled in this book examines the home and how residential structures, technology, and creativity will effect our future living systems. The signs are pointing to a new era of residential structure. The way we make, the way we live, and the way we socially interact is quickly evolving, and the home will be a major part of this transformation.

Digital fabrication tools are becoming highly accessible to the masses, the do it yourself movement is more popular than ever, and people are viewing the home in a whole new way. The experiments that designers and engineers are performing could revolutionize our process of thinking, as well as our communities and spaces of living. In only a couple of years we could be living in an entirely reformed residential system, and every stakeholder in this system needs be prepared in order for the system to work effectively.

With the housing market on the rise, and some big steps forward for new housing processes, now is the time to design an acclimation process for everyone who will inevitably become involved in these new residential structures. Analysis of all aspects of the home; the creative process surrounding the home, the lineage and evolution of the home, the physical and social structures of the home, and most importantly, the relationships between people and the home, has brought forth key elements of our residential structures that can
be manipulated to aid in this acclimation stage. The most important of these elements is our new creative processes and abilities, and the relationships between stakeholders in the system. The design approach to forming this acclimation stage will involve eliminating the disconnect between the stakeholders, as well as producing tools that will fully “unlock” the creativity that a home can catalyze.
