From 1918 to 1964 the Oval Wood Dish Factory provided the small town of Tupper Lake, New York with economic stability and employment for people throughout the area. When the factory went out of business, the Adirondack town relied on its summer visitors for it's main income, but this was not enough. Now Tupper Lake is in an economically depressed period with an unused 100,000 square foot factory building sitting in the middle of town. The Design 360 Competition challenged design teams to repurpose the Oval Wood Dish in order to revitalize Tupper Lake.

The OWD was an amazing example of American Manufacturing during its peak. However, today it is an empty shell do to the rise of outsourced plastics manufacturing. American made manufacturing has not become obsolete. All we need is a highly adaptable space with an ever changing creative outlook. This is why we in Otter Design Group developed Carn, The Creative Colaboratory.

Carn’s system is made possible by two central modes, the sustainable American made production space and the six resident creatives. The production space pays tribute to the history of the Oval Wood Dish factory, producing a consistent line of wood and metal products designed for America’s “US made goods” buying trend, while using materials from the storage space that are stocked from local suppliers. The six resident creatives provide Carn with innovation and the ability to adapt to the market.

Creatives are individuals who can be defined as craftsmen, artisans, artists, and designers. Twelve creatives are chosen by Carn's selection board to present their work during Carn’s “Tupper Talks” competing to become one of the six chosen resident artisans. Tupper Talks is major event for Carn and the community of Tupper lake, bringing people from all over to observe talented individuals sharing their life work.

After presenting their work during “Tupper Talks” held in Carn’s gallery space, Carn selects six of the contenders to be become Carn’s resident creatives. Within a three month span the creatives live in Carn’s housing quarters, work together in the creative workshop, teach in the public workshop, work in their private studio, and in the end produce one product that they would like to market. Carn then selects two creatives to move their product into production.

Carn provides the Creatives with top of the line workspaces and equipment for any type of medium and fabrication technique.

Each Resident Creative is also provided their own personal workspaces.

Education is important for Tupper Lake as well as Carn. Carn provides a public workshop for schools in the region that would like to offer classes in trade skills, and the environment. The public workshop also acts as space where community members and visitors can take part in a variety of weekly classes.

One of Tupper Lake’s biggest challenges is the renewal of jobs for its community members. Carn will not only provide the tourism that will improve the economy and create jobs, but will offer well paid positions within the facility. Community members can work a wide variety of jobs including production staff, workshop maintenance, event preparation, gallery management, and administrative positions.

Jobs will also stem from the improvement in Tupper’s tourism. With Carn, people from all over can come watch talented creatives present their work during Tupper Talks. Visitors can also take an all exclusive tour through the facility or attend a variety of workshops. As Carn becomes a more familiar institution, more and more people will come to Tupper Lake to experience the space, simultaneously improving Tupper’s economy.

Carn’s unique product line and production system, utilizing a variety of sustainable materials, will be a model for the new age of American manufacturing. We at Carn feel it is our duty to help bring manufacturing back to the U.S., and renew communities suffering from the outsourcing of their jobs. We believe that when a manufacturing space has the necessary tools to adapt to the world around it, being the use of local materials, and the creatives that drive its ever changing products, production can thrive in any conditions. Carn will not only test the waters of new forms of production, but find solutions to our need for manufacturing to return to the United States as an economic stabilizer.

What do we need to make this system a reality? To get Carn initially off the ground, we project that we need approximately 3.3 Million dollars for renovation. Yearly we project Carn will use about 1.2 million dollars for job salaries, insurance, utilities, food, and maintenance. Earnings will come from events, tours, workshops, grants, and most importantly the manufactured goods. These products will be sold in gift shops, specialty stores, furniture stores, a variety of magazines, in Carn’s gallery, and on Carn’s webpage.
